From Tank Terminal to Startup Hub: How Sinko ID Is Helping Shape the Port of the Future

Delft, 18 June 2026 – Sinko ID is helping shape the next generation of port-based industry by connecting industrial expertise with entrepreneurial innovation in the Port of Rotterdam.

The Port of Rotterdam is entering a new era. While maintaining its position as one of the world’s leading industrial and logistics hubs, the port must also accelerate the transition to a more sustainable energy and materials economy. For Sinko Consultants, this challenge represents a unique opportunity: combining industrial expertise with innovation to help shape the next generation of port-based industry.

In addition to delivering complex industrial projects, the company is investing in an ecosystem where emerging technology companies can develop, scale and commercialize solutions for the energy transition.

“Many startups have exceptional technology but lack the experience, facilities, commercial expertise or funding needed to reach the next stage,” says Frank Hollander, Chief Operating Officer of Sinko Consultants. “Our ambition is to bridge that gap.”

Founded six years ago to meet the growing demand for experienced project teams in the tank storage and industrial sectors, Sinko Consultants has grown into an organization of approximately 150 professionals specializing in project management, construction management and the execution of complex industrial projects.

One of the company’s landmark achievements was the completion of the former HES Hartel Tank Terminal. After the terminal entered bankruptcy, Sinko Consultants was appointed to assess the site and later entrusted by the new owner, Impala, with completing the project. Over a two-year period, the team successfully delivered the terminal, which is now fully operational.

Building an Innovation Ecosystem

Sinko Consultants’ ambitions extend far beyond traditional project delivery.

Earlier this year, its subsidiary, Sinko Innovation & Development (Sinko ID), acquired the former Kuwait Petroleum Research & Technology Center in Rotterdam’s Europoort district. The facility is being transformed into a dedicated innovation campus where startups can develop and demonstrate technologies that support the energy and raw materials transition.

The response from the market has exceeded expectations.

“Before we had officially opened our doors, we were already in discussions with dozens of startups interested in establishing themselves here,” says Hollander.

Sinko ID offers far more than laboratory space, pilot facilities and demonstration sites. The company actively supports entrepreneurs in securing investment, refining their commercial strategy and bringing new technologies to market.

“We don’t want to be simply a landlord renting out laboratory space,” Hollander explains. “Many startups possess outstanding technology, but commercialisation is often the biggest hurdle. That’s where we believe we can make a real difference.”

Accelerating Sustainable Industry

The technologies being developed within the Sinko ID ecosystem share a common objective: enabling a more sustainable industrial future.

Current initiatives include technologies that convert captured CO₂ into valuable feedstocks, fermentation processes that replace fossil-based raw materials with sustainable alternatives, innovative energy storage solutions and advanced recycling technologies for industrial waste streams.

The company is also exploring technologies that combine local renewable energy generation with alternative fuels to reduce grid congestion while lowering emissions from industrial operations.

According to Hollander, these developments highlight a side of the Port of Rotterdam that is often overlooked.

“The port is typically associated with large-scale industry, terminals and refineries. But it is equally a place where pioneering technologies are being developed and innovations that will define the future of industry itself.”

More Than a Business Network

As Sinko ID assumes a more prominent role within Rotterdam’s industrial ecosystem, joining Deltalinqs was a natural step.

For the company, membership is about more than expanding its network; it is about actively contributing to the future development of the port.

“Visibility is important, but collaboration is even more valuable,” says Hollander. “Whether it’s permitting, creating room for innovation or supporting the long-term development of the port area, these are challenges that can only be addressed by working together.”

As the Port of Rotterdam continues its transformation, Sinko ID aims to play a pivotal role in connecting industrial expertise with entrepreneurial innovation—helping promising technologies move from the laboratory to commercial reality and contributing to a more sustainable, competitive and future-ready port.
